Michael (Mike) Boorda died by self-inflicted gunshot on May 16, 1996, halfway through his four-year tour as Chief of Naval Operations. A majority of journalists questioned whether the most commonly offered explanation (Boorda's wearing of unauthorized medals, until 10 months prior to his death, when he took them off) was the significant triggering event for this suicide, even though Boorda himself offered this as his only explanation. NCIS undertook a comprehensive investigation, UNCLASSIFIED, which was completed by early September 1996, and known as the NCIS Report of Investigation of ADM Boorda's Suicide. However, the Navy has often been disinclined to release the names and contact info of others interested in ADM Boorda, or any information on the subject of Boorda. Purposes of this website: (1) To request from readers a copy of that Report's Exhibit 36, which is the 16 May 1996 NCIS inventory of contents of Boorda's official automobile (-- incl his Back Seat Notes). I already have the version sent out by NCIS after 2011, with typed pagination, but there was a mixup. If you have the early version of Exhibit 36 (- - i.e., a copy you obtained before 2011, which would have handwritten pagination), please send me a copy (the 2 pp cover memo, plus nine handwritten pages). None of this is classified. (2) To establish contact with others interested in exchanging information about ADM Boorda, and to hear their views about the pressures that caused his suicide. (But, not interested in hearing about the medals controversy, or about conspiracy or assassination theories.) (3) To provide the public with the 2015 redaction, i.e., the most recent Redaction of the NCIS Report of Investigation of the Suicide of ADM J.M. Boorda, Chief of Naval Operations.
